This is Leslie ...

She left school in grade 11 to take a job at a local factory. After working at the factory for 26 years it closed without warning and she is now out of a job. Any new job she finds requires at least a high school diploma and computer literacy. Leslie has never had a need to use a computer, and can’t afford to go back to school.

What should Leslie do?

What should Leslie do?

  • A

Go back to school and upgrade her credentials, forcing her to take money out of her retirement fund to pay for travel and supplies.

  • B

Wait to find a job that she is qualified for, knowing that the unemployment rate in the city is at an all-time high.

What happened?

A local job counselor recommended that Leslie contact a United Way funded literacy program. This program provided Leslie with computer training, helped her polish her literacy skills, and gave her the necessary qualifications for landing a new job.
